In Chrome’s own traffic data, claude.ai moved from the top 5,000 sites to the top 1,000 between September 2024 and August 2026, and chat.deepseek.com went from the top 500,000 to the top 5,000. We looked up 13 AI chatbot sites and 14 other AI sites across six CrUX monthly snapshots. In August 2026, 4 of the 13 chatbots were in the top 1,000 and 8 in the top 5,000, against 3 and 6 in September 2024.

Read this first. CrUX publishes only a coarse popularity bucket (top 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 50,000 and so on), not traffic counts. A site can double its visitors without changing bucket, and a move between buckets can reflect a small change. CrUX counts visits by Chrome users who have opted in to usage statistics, not all internet users or all browsers. We compare rank buckets only.

Rank bucket by month: AI chatbots

“Top N” means CrUX’s rank bucket for the origin. “Not listed” means the origin was not in that month’s data, which CrUX says happens when an origin doesn’t “meet the popularity threshold”.

Some of these moves reflect where a service lives rather than how popular it is. For example, a product can move between a root domain and an app subdomain, and we track each origin separately. chatgpt.com’s early buckets (top 500,000 in September 2023 and top 50,000,000 in March 2024) look low for a site of its size today, which may reflect how that domain was used at the time. We haven’t checked, so read those two cells with care. For how sites treat AI crawlers, see the AI-Crawler & llms.txt Census and AI opt-outs in robots.txt; for automated traffic on Wikipedia, see Wikipedia’s bot traffic.

Method

Data. Google BigQuery public dataset chrome-ux-report.materialized.device_summary, rank column, for 27 origins that returned data, queried 11 October 2026 for six snapshot dates (1 Sep 2023, 1 Mar 2024, 1 Sep 2024, 1 Mar 2025, 1 Sep 2025, 1 Aug 2026). The query scanned 2.88 GB. The rank column is described by Google as a “Coarse popularity ranking”.

Choice of sites. We chose the chatbot and AI sites by hand before looking at results, using the origins commonly used for each service. Sites we didn’t include are not ranked below those we did. If a site is missing, it is missing from our list, not from the web.

Verification. A separate script re-reads the saved BigQuery output, recomputes every count and checks each quote against the saved Google documentation.

Caveats

  • Rank buckets are coarse. Google also notes that “A small amount of randomness is applied to the dataset to prevent reverse-engineering of sensitive data, such as total traffic volumes.”
  • CrUX measures Chrome page loads from opted-in users. Mobile apps, other browsers and API use are not counted, so apps such as ChatGPT’s own mobile app don’t show up here.
  • Rank is relative to all sites, so a chatbot can fall if other sites grow faster.
  • Domain moves, subdomains and regional variants can change what an origin represents.
  • Third-party estimates of chatbot share use different methods and will not match this page.
